MCDAF Programs
Since 1998 the Montgomery County Maryland Delta Alumnae Foundation has provided support for educational and public service programs to the residents of Montgomery County. The members of the Foundation volunteer hours of their time through many outlets including:
The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy Delta Academy
A mentor program targeted to middle aged school girls (11-14) whose primary goal is to prepare young girls for leadership in the 21st Century. The activities implemented most Delta GEMS often include: computer training, self-esteem and etiquette workshops, field trips and cultural outings including museums, plays, and concerts.
Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully)
A mentor program designed for high school aged girls (14-18) who have potential, but need guidance, support, and skill to achieve success. The activities will encourage young women to develop leadership skills, identify career options, and pursue higher education.
Scholarship & Standards
The Foundation funds two scholarships administered by the Scholarship & Standards Committee of Chapter. The County wide scholarship awards a four year scholarship to students attending any high school in Montgomery County,MD. The Delta GEMS scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who have participated in the Delta GEMS program.
Science in Everyday Experiences
The Foundation, in partnership with Delta Research and Education Foundation (DREF) and the Chapter, have developed and implemented a 5-year Science and Everyday Experiences (SEE) Initiative, an informal science education project funded by the National Science Foundation. The SEE Initiative will help parents and caregivers of African American elementary and middle school age children (K-8) develop effective ways to support children's informal science and mathematics learning experiences.
